You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.
“…endlessly pounding after pleasure, endlessly fleeing from pain, and endlessly ignoring 90 percent of our experience – Henepola Gunaratana
If life is what goes on around us, then how much of it do we actually see or partake in? For those engaged with modern life, the above quote seems particularly appropriate. Learning to bring Mindfulness into your life can be a crucial element in finding peace from your thinking. We may not be able to stop our thoughts, but we can change how we interact with them.
It is what happens after the thought that you have some control of, and here the Mindfulness ‘two arrow’ analogy is perfect. It is not what happens to us (the first arrow), that causes lasting pain, but what we make of it (the second arrow). If we have an anxious thought (the first arrow), and manage to stand back from it, and observe it with compassion and curiosity, it will leave a mark, but it will also pass.
If we get all annoyed, anxious, self-critical, and start struggling, fighting, avoiding, or resisting the thought, this, then is the second arrow…the arrow which causes us the most pain…the self-inflicted arrow. Mindfulness teaches us to accept our current reality as best we can, which does not mean giving in, or succumbing to our problems, but giving us the space to solve whatever difficulties we are confronted with.
Why not come and learn how to stand back…
